The Viking Reserve of Foteviken is created in order to illustrate what a densely built-up settlement might have looked like during the late Viking Age and early Middle age. Semicircular defence earthworks enclose the conurbation. This area is being developed gradually and it will look more and more like a little early medieval city. We plan to build some thirty or forty houses in this part of The Viking Reserve. In the beginning of 2002 sixteen houses have been built and these are ready to be used during the season.
In this area you will find simple handicraft houses. You also find a house for travelling pilgrims.
A main street runs parallel to the shore. In the west, along the shore the simple cottage of the archer, a smokehouse and a tannery are situated. There is, however one important exception, on the corner site at The Shore lane an imposing house is located.
Narrow lanes emanates from The Commonage street. The lanes run into the settlement. When entering the little city via The South gate, you will find the first lane to the right. This is The Thinghöll lane, which leads to The Thinghöll. Located at this lane are also the magnificent house of Sven The Juror and the house of Peter The Scribe.
This lane runs from The Commonage street to the State demesne. Eventually more houses will be built alongside this lane. Fences and ditches separate the different sites. There are small footbridges lying over the ditches.
